I saggi e discorsi riuniti in questo volume, uscito in edizione originale nel 1954, sono stati tutti (salvo uno) composti intorno al 1950, cioè nel periodo in cui si andava diffondendo nella filosofia europea la discussione intorno al significato della cosiddetta «svolta» del pensiero heideggeriano annunciata clamorosamente dalla Lettera sull’umanismo nel 1946. I Saggi e discorsi, più di altri scritti heideggeriani, rappresentano un primo sforzo per articolare in maniera positiva le indicazioni contenute nello scritto sull’umanismo, e offrono perciò un punto di vista privilegiato per cogliere l’immagine dell’uomo e del compito del pensiero quale Heidegger la pensa in un momento decisivo del suo itinerario filosofico. Il problema che si delineava già in Essere e tempo, e che poi diventa dominante nella maturazione degli anni Trenta, è per Heidegger quello di realizzare un pensiero che non sia più «metafisico», cioè che cominci, almeno, a sottrarsi a quell’oblio dell’essere che ha dominato la tradizione del pensiero occidentale da Platone a Nietzsche.
