I Saggi e discorsi, più di altri scritti heideggeriani, rappresentano un primo sforzo per articolare in maniera positiva le indicazioni contenute nello scritto sull’umanismo, e offrono perciò un punto di vista privilegiato per cogliere l’immagine dell’uomo e del compito del pensiero quale Heidegger la pensa in un momento decisivo del suo itinerario filosofico. Il problema che si delineava già in Essere e tempo, e che poi diventa dominante nella maturazione degli anni Trenta, è per Heidegger quello di realizzare un pensiero che non sia più «metafisico», cioè che cominci, almeno, a sottrarsi a quell’oblio dell’essere che ha dominato la tradizione del pensiero occidentale da Platone a Nietzsche.
