Das steirische „Doppelkloster“ Admont dient Christina Lutter als Ausgangspunkt für die Frage, welchen Stellenwert die Fertigkeiten des Lesens und Schreibens für die Lebenswirklichkeit von Frauen und Männern in Reformklöstern des 12. Jahrhunderts hatten. Welchen Einfluss nahmen diese Kompetenzen auf die Bewertung von Geschlechterverhältnissen? In welchem Bezug standen spirituelles Wissen und praktische Tätigkeiten zu zeitgenössisch vorherrschenden Konzepten von Geschlecht, Wissensfähigkeit und Bildung? Der Autorin gelingt eine konsequente Zusammenschau geschlechtergeschichtlicher und kulturwissenschaftlicher Fragestellungen mit einer genauen Analyse des Quellenmaterials. Entstanden ist ein gut lesbares und anschauliches Gesamtbild, das durch mehrere (Neu-)Editionen grundlegender Texte, gut aufbereitete Bildquellen und Erklärungsgrafiken abgerundet wird.
