Attraverso lo studio partecipe della Wolf vediamo Christa T. confrontarsi con gli eventi verso i quali la sua irrequieta natura la conduce: l'amore infelice per Kostija che le preferisce una giovane donna dolce e rassicurante, le sue difficoltà a mantenere un impegno regolare e proficuo negli studi, la scelta di fare l'insegnante, l'incontro con Justus, l'uomo appassionato, innamorato e saldo che sarà il padre dei suoi figli, le sue irresistibili e disperate fughe nell'abbandonarsi ad amori irragionevoli e dannati: tutte le possibili derive le appaiono lecite e quasi obbligate per sfuggire alla normalità.
