小说的故事发生在长江水利规划设计院的乌泥湖宿舍,这里的十幢小红楼里居住着一群或从海外学成归来、或出自国内名牌学府的水利专家,他们都是在共产党和新中国的感召下,为着举世罕见的三峡工程而来。他们一个个才高八斗、神采飞扬、温文尔雅、自命不凡,期待着在国家经济建设中大显身手、建功立业。然而,在1957年反右运动开始以后的十年中,他们的性格一点点地消损,他们的豪情一点点地泯灭,他们的良知被逼到灵魂的死角,他们的傲气被扫荡殆尽。不仅他们向往为之献身的三峡工程遥遥无期,他们自己也早已风华不再、心绪黯然。到了“文化大革命”的1966年,他们更是如同惊弓之乌,心惊胆战、无所依傍,只有听凭极左政治的狂风暴雨任意摧残。 小说中的一些情节对于许多读者并不陌生,例如,苏非聪因为偶然的原因被划为“右派”,他清高而又脆弱的个性使他无法忍受这不白之冤、飞来横祸,他断然辞职,举家返口农村,娇柔的太太、弱小的女儿和他一起变成了地道的农民。林嘉禾善良正直、教子有方,但他的“右派”问题使他的儿子林问天不被信任,大学毕业后只能在锅炉房劳动,一场突如其来的事故更令他雪上加霜、百日莫辩。这个诚实单纯的优秀青年最终被逼得铤而走险,身陷囹圄。党员知识分子、领导干部皇甫白沙,也未能逃脱“右派”的命运。他的儿子皇甫浩同样因父亲的“问题”不被大学录取,只得到偏僻山区插队。他在劳动中被牛踢伤,因救治不当而死。皇甫白沙曾经对自己的前途做了最坏的预料,他认为自己有能力承担任何不幸。当儿子的死讯传来,他痛不欲生,悲愤地想,我是杀死儿子的凶手,当年我为什么要为了自己的良心而主持正义呢?我没有失去良心,却断送了自己的儿子!小说的主要人物丁子恒,一向小心翼翼、谨慎少言,又蒙命运垂青,侥幸通过了一场场劫难,保全了家小,保全了自己。然而在小说结尾的1966年,当他看着绝望的吴松杰从烟囱上跳下,他感觉自己也己经死去。一个没有灵魂的人,活着与死去有什么两样?
