We have done the work for you! Busy clinicians, students, and educators will find this handy guide to the best nursing and health care sites on the web invaluable. Nurse specialists have reviewed and selected the top sites within 28 general categories, covering both clinical and professional topics. Each web site is accompanied by its web address, a summary of the site and its relevance to nurses, and information on the sponsoring organization or individuals. An in-depth chapter on how to evaluate web sites concludes the book. Contributors include Carol Romano, Trudy Johnson, Judith Graves, and Diane Skiba.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Mary A. Curran, RN, PhD(University of North Carolina-Charlotte)
Description:This is a guide for clinical nurses with a growing competence in the use of the World Wide Web. The book provides a relevant overview of available resources in various specialty areas, but it is not intended to be a complete listing.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide clinical nurses who are new to the Internet with a guide to the World Wide Web. Sites included in the book were viewed as useful to the clinician and generalizable to practice.
Audience:The book is written for "busy clinicians, students and educators." Content focuses on Internet sites that are viewed as representative of relevant subject matter.
Features:This book divides its Internet focus into two areas for the professional nurse: clinical web sites and professional web sites. Example content in these divisions includes review of Internet sites in 28 content areas such as HIV/AIDS, mental health, etc. These areas have been reviewed and evaluated by knowledgeable nurses, who have interest and expertise in the category and about the World Wide Web. Each selected site is evaluated by five criteria: authority/source; purpose/objectivity; content; currency; and design. The last section contains a chapter on evaluating information in addition to an alphabetical index of web sites.
Assessment:Use of expert recommendations, gives books a little different approach in comparison to related titles, but the clinical specialties of some reviewers are not identified. The last chapter gives an excellent discussion of Internet evaluation with White Paper recommendations from the Health Summit meetings. However, these are not the criteria used by the book's editors.
