Als »eine Art geheimer und chiffrierter Autobiographie« erschienen Martin Beheim-Schwarzbach Carl Zuckmayers Gedichte. Er hatte als junger Mann Gedichte zu schreiben begonnen und diese Ausdrucksform sein Leben lang beibehalten. Einige lassen sich unter dem Stichwort Naturlyrik sammeln - seinem ersten Gedichtband 1926 gab er charakteristischerweise den Titel ›Der Baum‹ -, aber immer dringt kraftvoll das unmittelbare Erlebnis durch die Metaphern, bis sich schließlich die persönliche Erfahrung, nicht nur des Exils, durchsetzt. Der Titel dieses Bandes, ›Abschied und Wiederkehr‹, will dem gerecht werden. Die Gliederung entspricht im wesentlichen Zuckmayers eigenen Zusammenstellungen von 1926 und 1948; die von seiner Frau Alice Herdan-Zuckmayer 1977 ergänzte Ausgabe wurde für diese Edition revidiert und um einige Gedichte aus der Zeit des Ersten Weltkriegs erweitert.
