Sein Drama, 1963 durch Erwin Piscator in Berlin uraufgeführt, wurde seither in über 25 Ländern gespielt und war Gegenstand der größten Kontroverse der deutschen Theatergeschichte.Die Tatsachen selbst stehen nicht zur Debatte: dass der Papst über alle angemessenen Informationen verfügte und dass er selbst dann seine Stimme nicht zum Protest erhob, als die Juden, auch die katholischen Juden, während der Besetzung Roms durch die Deutschen unmittelbar unter den Fenstern des Vatikans zusammengetrieben wurden.
