Après une tentative d'empoisonnement à la tetrodotoxine infligée par un agent du SMERSH Klebb Rosa (voir le roman précédent Bons Baisers de Russie), James Bond est envoyé en mission en Jamaïque par M.Celui-ci considère la mission comme une "cure de repos". La tâche de Bond est une simple assignation à enquêter sur la disparition du chef du MI6 J à Kingston, le commandant John Strangways (qu'il avait rencontré cinq ans auparavant dans Vivre et laisser mourir) et de sa secrétaire. Selon les autorités locales, les deux auraient fait une escapade amoureuse.
