Richard Elauved, quatorze ans et mal dans sa peau, est recueilli, après la mort de ses parents, par son oncle et sa tante dans une petite ville où il s’ennuie ferme, ne fréquentant que Tom, bègue et moqué de tous. Le jour où ce dernier se volatilise, on accuse Richard de l’avoir poussé dans la rivière. Personne ne le croit quand il raconte que le téléphone de la cabine publique où il avait entraîné son camarade pour faire des blagues a dévoré l’oreille, puis la main, le bras et... le reste du corps de Tom. Personne sauf l’énigmatique Karen, qui l’encourage à mener une investigation jugée superflue par la police. Envoyé en centre de redressement, Richard réussit à s’enfuir avec la complicité de jumeaux maléfiques et aboutit à un manoir abandonné dans la forêt, où se succèdent des phénomènes paranormaux qui semblent tous dirigés contre lui.
