Il libro di Matteo Grasso racconta la storia di Giovanni Fattori, allievo carabiniere classe 1924. Contadino originario di Montale, fu chiamato a Roma nell'estate 1943 e venne arrestato, insieme a circa 2000 colleghi, dai soldati tedeschi con la complicità dei repubblichini pochi giorni prima della famosa retata al ghetto di Roma. Venne deportato in condizioni disumane nel lager di Wolfsberg dove rimase prigioniero fino all'aprile 1945. Fu definito IMI, Internato Militare Italiano, insieme ad altri 600.000 soldati rinchiusi nei lager nazisti. Più volte la Repubblica di Salò tentò di convincerlo ad arruolarsi: in questo modo sarebbe stato liberato e sarebbe tornato in Italia. Più volte disse "no", come il 95% dei militari italiani rinchiusi nei campi di concentramento. La ricostruzione storica è composta da più elementi: la fitta corrispondenza scritta e ricevuta da Giovanni durante l'internamento; la testimonianza orale di Giovanni raccolta dall'autore in più occasioni.
