Pendant des années et jusqu'à sa mort, en 1971, Winnicott a travaillé à ce livre, très différent de ses autres écrits. Sous un titre ambitieux et un peu provocateur, l'auteur, qui, jusqu'alors, avait exposé ses vues et ses trouvailles en de brefs articles (Jeu et réalité) ou dans des conférences faites devant les auditoires les plus variés (les Conversations ordinaires), nous offre une présentation synthétique de ses idées, en prenant appui sur sa triple expérience : de médecin, de pédiatre et de psychanalyste. La perspective ici choisie est celle du développement de l'être humain. Comment, au-delà de la diversité des disciplines toujours plus nombreuses et spécialisées qui prennent l'homme pour objet, décrire ce qui, en son fond, constitue sa nature ? Comment, à travers les conflits et les déchirements, les phases d'excitation et de retrait qui marquent d'un bout à l'autre son existence, l'individu peut-il malgré tout trouver une certaine unité et rejoindre ce que Winnicott appelait le «vrai self» ?
