小说的故事发生在长江水利规划设计院的乌泥湖宿舍,这里的十幢小红楼里居住着一群或从海外学成归来、或出自国内名牌学府的水利专家,他们都是在共产党和新中国的感召下,为着举世罕见的三峡工程而来。他们一个个才高八斗、神采飞扬、温文尔雅、自命不凡,期待着在国家经济建设中大显身手、建功立业。然而,在1957年反右运动开始以后的十年中,他们的性格一点点地消损,他们的豪情一点点地泯灭,他们的良知被逼到灵魂的死角,他们的傲气被扫荡殆尽。不仅他们向往为之献身的三峡工程遥遥无期,他们自己也早已风华不再、心绪黯然。(The story takes place in the Yangtze River Water Resources Planning and Design Institute of Wu Ni Lake dormitory. In these ten small Red Mansions, there is a group of water conservancy experts who come back from abroad or come from famous universities in china. They are all under the inspiration of the Communist Party and new China, for the rare project of the Three Gorges Project. All of them are excellent, cultured and look forward to displaying skills to the full contributions in the national economic construction. However, in ten years after the beginning of the anti rightist movement in 1957, their character a little bit emaciated, their pride died out little by little, their conscience was forced into the dead corner of the soul and they were wiped out in pride. Not only the Three Gorges project, which they aspire to devote themselves to, is far away and not within the foreseeable future, they themselves had long lost their charm and were in a state of gloomy mood.)
