Ma inaspettatamente Melchior Percheval, un avvocato di fama dalla mente lucida, giunge dalla città per difenderlo. Cosa induce Percheval a rischiare la carriera per uno sconosciuto? Quali inconfessabili demoni, ben più concreti di quelli paventati da Bossuat, nasconde la sua scelta? Mentre Percheval fa i conti con il proprio passato, in paese la scia di morte si allunga. Convinto di fronteggiare una dilagante infezione demoniaca, l'inquisitore si appresta a compiere una spietata purificazione collettiva. Per l'avvocato, invece, ad agire nell'ombra sfruttando la credulità generale è uno spirito malvagio ma del tutto umano. Sullo sfondo dell'eterna lotta tra ragione e fanatismo, Percheval e l'amico medico Estienne mettono a repentaglio le loro vite in una corsa contro il tempo per scoprire la verità e impedire che altro sangue innocente venga versato.
