Hobswyke
C. R. Clarke
Troubador Publishing Limited, 2024
The finish of school life should have gifted Lucy Claybourne an uncomplicated summer, that is, until she makes the decision to revisit Hobswyke Hall ― a sprawling, derelict manor house that was once her childhood home. Half a decade has passed since Lucy and her mother abandoned the gothic monstrosity that lords over the estate that surrounds it like a spider in its web and moved into the gatehouse on the far side of the grounds, a move supposedly made as a money saving exercise. But upon reacquaintance, Lucy realises there had to be more to the move than money, and it becomes her intention to find out what? Then the groundkeeper's son, Sam Fletcher, makes a terrifying discovery, a discovery that will alter the path of Lucy's life in ways that will make her question everything she's ever known, and anything she's ever been told by those she holds dearest to her heart. There is something very wrong with Hobswyke Hall, but some things are better off left...

Cold
Jim Pearce
Troubador Publishing Limited, PS, 2023
The near future is a world in which scientists and their AI got it wrong. Rising temperatures have caused fires that burned landmasses, and the ash from these fires block out the sun. The resulting cold is extreme, like a nuclear winter, and was a mass extinction event for human beings the world over. Electricity grids, communications and services all failed. Societies collapsed. Humanity is reduced to small groups of survivors, scraping by however they can. Resources are scarce, and bands of survivors resort to violence to obtain enough food and fuel to survive. A man and his family group have survived the cruel winter by hiding in a house in Surrey, but when a roaming gang starts to ravage the area, they are forced to run. As they flee to safety, the cohesion and tolerance that had kept them going for so long starts to fracture

DI Gutteridge 1: The Art of Killing
C. R. Clarke
Troubador Publishing Limited, DI Gutteridge, 2023
"I can honestly say that this is the best crime thriller I have ever read..." TN Traynor – Author A chance discovery of something unimaginable will steer Detective Patrick Gutteridge’s life down a path littered with memories of his past, memories he’s spent a decade trying to forget. For two years, Gloucester’s provincial streets have glowed to the media interest gifted by the works of an anonymous graffiti artist ― Tick-Tock. But the art is changing, distorting, each piece becoming more perverse and contentious than the last. Only DI Gutteridge sees a pattern forming which points to something far more sinister looming on the horizon. Can he decipher it in time to prevent the impending storm, or will the city be forced to wear the infamy of a series of events so shocking, it threatens to stain its streets forever. Who is the artist turned killer? What malevolent force drives them? And who can decode their warping message in time to stop the bloodshed? Only time will tell, but time is fast running out!

How Great Thinkers Transformed Our Ideas: Share the Insights of Newton, Hawking, Curie and Other Geniuses
C. C. Hagan
Troubador Publishing Limited, 2024
"Dare to think!” This was the catch cry of the Enlightenment over 300 years ago when the breakaway from religion towards a more secular society began. Isaac Newton led the Scientific Revolution which transformed society for the next 300 years with progress not then dreamed of. Stephen Hawking revealed a new cosmology and linked Einstein’s relativity to small scale quantum mechanics. Yet what was the mind set of Newton’s age compared to Hawking’s age? What were the changes in the mind sets of society and philosophy during those 300 years and were they all linked to science? This book represents a slice of the history of ideas, science and philosophy mixed with their personal lives against how science, mathematics and philosophy evolved over those 300 years. Revealed are the truly astonishing stories and ideas of five of the greatest thinkers who ever lived who provided us rich insights into the cosmos. Their stories class them as true founders of scientific revolutions, battlers with feats of endurance, and triumphs to rise to great heights. Through the personal tragedies of Curie and Hawking to the intellectual battles fought by Einstein, Newton and Leibniz these five scientists inspire us and enrich our ideas.

Troubador Publishing Limited, FR, 2023
Arbitrator, Jim Brown is returning to Earth after completing a successful mission to put down a revolution on and also thwarting an invasion of the planet Pirrus, an Earth colony. While there he found out that he is part alien and this secret had been hidden from him since birth. Brown finds that an alien species has successfully assimilated themselves with the humans on Earth and is ruling over them covertly. When an attempt is made to kidnap him, he realises he has become a target in a hidden game where different groups are vying for power, complicated by the introduction of artificial humans and super androids to boost Earths population and armies. Some ruling factions are preparing for war against the planet Levita and re-conquest of a group of planets, former colonies in the Delta Quadrant, who have declared their independence from Earth. Brown realises that he is also running the gauntlet of former enemies who are out to get him. He is desperate to thwart the prospects of war against Levita, where he has a son he has never met and is also against re-colonisation after his recent experiences on Pirrus. Aboard The Space Adventurer, the cruise ship on which he is returning, he meets two beautiful women. Marika, who has been sent as his minder, by the EPA, Earth Policy Administration, to keep an eye on Brown as they dont fully trust him and Leela, the daughter of Earths biggest industrialist, who is secretly building the super androids on a space hub, where the ship makes a stop. He soon realises that he is in a desperate battle for survival, before he can even reach Earth and the big bash the EPA is throwing for him, for successfully completing his mission on Pirrus.

What Tomorrow Brings
S. J. Thompson
Troubador Publishing Limited, 2023
Doctor Eleanor Sutherland is urgently summoned back to the family home, by her Senior Police Officer father. To her horror, with Ministerial approval she was made sole heir to the estate of the now deceased British MP, Nigel Trevisa. Her father reveals a story of covert data gathering on Nigel Trevisa. How did he achieve high office? Why did his sexual predatory tendencies go unpunished? Where did the money come from to acquire a grand lifestyle? His task turned into an obsession as the questions went unanswered. Together with trusted family and friends, Eleanor yields to her father's request if only to untangle herself from his spooky world. As the pace accelerates, the vengefulness and brutality of Trevisa's only offspring Cassandra, comes as a complete shock to all. In Eleanor's battle to stay alive she not only takes on the persona of someone brave and fearless, but places her trust in one man. This makes her question if cutting herself off from emotional involvement is a good idea, as they become romantically closer. In an explosive double-headed climax three people will not survive the ordeal.

The edge of the nest : the solitude of Ivan Turgenev
Christopher Cruise
Troubador Publishing Limited, Kibworth Beauchamp, 2015
The Russian novelist Ivan Turgenev lived in turbulent times. This fictional biography, solidly founded on historical and literary research, explores his life and work – from his childhood, dominated by his tyrannical mother, to his last years, in the tender care of Pauline Viardot, the Franco-Spanish diva who was the love of his life. Author Christopher Cruise offers insights into other affairs and flirtations, together with his ambivalent relationship with his illegitimate daughter Paulinette, the result of a half-hour liaison with a servant girl. The reader is transported to many parts of Europe, from the revolutionary streets of St Petersburg to the cultural salons of Paris. The intense generational clash of his era inspired his best-known work, Fathers and Children, while his mother's cruelty ignited in him a lifelong horror of violence and injustice which found expression in A Sportsman's Sketches, a book that contributed to Czar Alexander II's decision to emancipate the...

"DCI Jane Birchfield is facing a series of personal challenges: a rocky relationship with her partner, her mum hardly talks to her; and her boss and mentor is critically ill, which means she is having to cover his post as well as her own. Then she has to take charge of the toughest of murder investigations. Young Jamie Castleton is found dead, seemingly frozen in position at a computer in a grubby internet cafe in the Manchester suburb of Ashbridge. Enquiries reveal he was a self employed tech consultant and a computer expert, so what was he doing in there? His mother is convinced he was up to no good, and the cafe manager is soon under suspicion for trying to hide Jamie's browser history. But the more Jane and her increasingly enthusiastic team dig under the surface, the more the evidence points to one of Manchester's biggest companies, Greaves, and its super-wealthy boss, Graeme Hargreaves. This leads Jane into a sordid underworld, and a surprise twist in the investigation forces her to face up to an event in her own past, that she has kept buried for 25 years. Slowly, but surely, the net tightens around the suspects, but can she stay objective, and can she keep herself, her team, and her relationship, together, and bring the killer to justice? For Jane it has become a personal crusade, but in this race against time there is far more at stake than she ever imagined."--Publisher's description

Together with trusted family and friends, Eleanor yields to her father’s request if only to untangle herself from his spooky world. As the pace accelerates, the vengefulness and brutality of Trevisa’s only offspring Cassandra, comes as a complete shock to all. In Eleanor’s battle to stay alive she not only takes on the persona of someone brave and fearless, but places her trust in one man. This makes her question if cutting herself off from emotional involvement is a good idea, as they become romantically closer. In an explosive double-headed climax three people will not survive the ordeal.

Millennium Jones is an American foreign correspondent, embroiled in a melting pot, in London. She abhors those slaughtering innocents for their cause, and reasons unreason with two convicts for her documentary "One Man's Good is Another Man's Evil". As three culturally diverse life-paths intersect, Millie sits on the fence, between a tramp and a terrorist: a sweet Englishman born into bad, and one hell-bent on heaven Iraqi, who's heard it all before. Emotions flow: rage, belly laughs, bewilderment... and then woe, as death's knell tolls, and a Ball of Confusion blows one mind to either: follow the guided path... or choose another route. Mother Nature spins our world. Human nature spins our minds. Ball of Confusion is an original, pacy, punchy, extremely topical novel offering several suspense filled perspectives that will appeal to fans of thought provoking thrillers and dramas

Troubador Publishing Limited, Leicester, 2012
At 25, Issy is already a mother of three. She has a weakness for a pretty face but now believes that handsome men are not reliable. She's prepared to give up good looks for security and turns to God and the church for help. When Lukan, 22, walks into her life with his very pretty face, she tells him she's not interested. He's too much like Easton, her last lover who's now living in a rum bottle, shattered by the death of their youngest child. She tells Lukan he's too young, too handsome, and hasn't even begun to sow his wild oats yet. But Issy is just the kind of woman Lukan is looking for to help take him to the next level of success. He's prepared to do anything to get her, including joining the church and leaving his childhood love and baby mother, Jez. When he proposes, Issy believes that God has answered her prayers and they quickly marry. Within the euphoria of Jamaica's independence, they begin to build a family and a business. But God has nothing to do with Jez's wrath and the hold she still has over Lukan. Despite his happy home, his success and his mother's warnings, Lukan finds himself drawn back to Jez, with devastating consequences for Issy and their children... Betrayed is a love triangle that takes the reader to two different locations and eras – beginning in the late 1950s in Jamaica and ending in Birmingham, England, in the late 1970s. It has been inspired by Colin Channer, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Kei Miller and Eric Jerome Dickie, and will appeal to fans of adult romance fiction.

And now she is free. But freedom isn't so easy to adapt to, and there is so much to learn about life, about friendship, about being loved and valued. Nor can those first years of her life be easily forgotten. There is grieving to do, there are ghosts to be exorcised. A story of a rebellion against the fashionable mores of our time. A young American is stranded in Scotland without any idea of how she got there. As she fights to discover the hidden forces behind her abduction, she discovers that she is the victim of a shadowy organisation with a hand in most governments across the world – an organisation completely amoral about the methods they use to achieve their goals – including people trafficking. Her trafficker betrays the organisation due to a hopeless juvenile infatuation with her and pays with his life. She lands among a group of isolated people whose fight against the threatening lunacy of the times is essentially a fight again the same people who have attempted to abduct her. Finding herself the subject of a serious and genuine affection which she only at length returns, she and her new companion (along with an eccentric retired policeman) fly out to California to try and uncover the truth about what has happened to her. Once there, they join forces with other rebels, but as their fight against the organisation becomes increasingly violent, the fate of the rebels hangs in the balance.

Two candles flaring at a Christmas crib. A nurse who steps inside a church to light them. A gunshot emptied in a man's head in the creaking stillness before dawn, that the nurse says she didn't hear. It's 1947 in the snowbound, war-scarred City of London, where Pandora's Box just got opened in the ruins, City Police has a vice killing on its hands, and a spooked councilor hires a shamus to help spare his blushes. Like the Buddha says, everything is connected. So it all can be explained. But that's a little cryptic when you happen to be the shamus, and you're standing over a corpse. "Elegant and spare but still cloaks itself in a terrific atmosphere. I liked the backstreet whores and the tipster barbers; the gold-leaf dining rooms and the tenement bedrooms. For me, it rang of Chandler - a grey-skied, British 'Big Sleep'." -ATLANTIC BOOKS

Oliver G. Thompson
Matador Publishing Ltd, Kibworth Beauchamp, 2020
Growing Nightmares & Dreams is a collection of ten, hard-hitting stories written about dark subjects. They do not shy away from exploring subject matter that are as unflinching as they are raw. All of them tackle the harsh-realities of life, and are not for the faint-hearted.Written in a fresh and exciting way, each story is read from a new and different perspective. While some are written in a traditional format, others do not follow this convention. ‘The House With Morals’ is told from four different perspectives in a household over the same period of time. ‘How’re You Feeling’ has been written in third person narrative and is one day in the life of someone with anxiety issues, but also has first person sections to better explain the thoughts and feelings of the individual. ‘Impressions Are Lies’ has been written in reverse chronological order to allow the reader the opportunity to absorb the story by looking at it with a different approach. ‘Five Minutes to Save a Life’ is written both in first and third-person narrative. The aim is to give the reader the initial first person narrative in the present tense to allow them to experience the first part of the story alongside the main character.

Mary Arden [Arden, Mary]
Troubador Publishing Limited, Kibworth Beauchamp, 2015
Brave Faces is Mary Arden's story as she moves from her privileged English upbringing to dealing with the realities of World War II. Mary's memoir gives an insight into the changes in society that took place with the advent of war. As the Second World War breaks out, Mary's parents are determined that their daughter's privileged upbringing should continue, and that life should carry on as much as normal. She is sent to finishing school and becomes a debutante attending 'coming out' balls in London, despite the nightly bombing raids. However, Mary is determined to do her bit for the war effort, and volunteers to serve as a Red Cross Nurse, before joining the WRNS. Accepted into the WRNS, not as an officer, but as 'other rank', Mary has to learn to live a very different kind of life to the one she was brought up to expect. She is used to being chaperoned, only talking to men she has been 'introduced' to, so it's an almost impossible task for her Senior WREN Officer to find a...

A Place of Sense : Little-known Meanings of British Place Names
Rick Vivian
Troubador Publishing Limited, Leicester, 2018
There are many works detailing and comparing the meanings of non-titular homographs; far fewer do so for names. A Place of Sense takes examples which are all genuine places that may be found on an OS map and seeks to redress that balance, at least to a small degree, with a large dose of humour.

Melting in the Middle
Andy Howden
Troubador Publishing Limited, Kibworth Beauchamp, 2020
Long-listed for the Exeter Novel Prize, Melting in the Middle is a literary comedy about redemption and second chances, played out amid the madness of modern life. For Stephen Carreras, life is in turmoil. His career with Britain's worst chocolate company is heading for the rocks when it's taken over by US confectionery giant Schmaltz. He's just turned forty, he's messed up on marriage and is struggling to keep a toehold in the lives of his monosyllabic teenage children. Then he meets Rachel, who dances to a very different beat. She challenges him to do good among the carnage that surrounds him. But to do so, he must confront his past and work out all over again what really matters... Praise for Melting in the Middle : "The dialogue zips along at a pace that keeps the reader on their toes without running out of breath" Ian McMillan, poet, author and presenter of The Verb on BBC Radio 3 "Whip-smart funny and brilliantly observed. Howden is a great storyteller, turning recognisable personalities and corporate events into sharp and clever comedy." Louise Fein, author of People Like Us "I was completely charmed. Funny, poignant and uplifting." Cathie Hartigan, author of Notes From The Lost

Whatever It Takes
Heaton Wilson
Troubador Publishing Limited, 2020

David Scott wants Gina's help with an investigation which takes her into the world of barristers' chambers in Gray's Inn, a production of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure , and a clash with her difficult younger daughter. Meanwhile, her granddaughter, ten-year-old Freda, has been sent to stay with her grandfather and his second wife in their imposing and isolated house in the Kent countryside, where a missing dog gives her a mystery of her own to solve. Moving between London and Kent, the book disentangles two mysteries as, for the first time, Freda is given a voice of her own.

This is the message, from the woman who was once her closest friend, that takes Gina Gray to the Lake District to unravel a mystery in circumstances which undermine even her boundless self-confidence. Charged with finding out what happened to a thirteen-year-old girl who has gone missing during a performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream, she takes her granddaughter Freda with her to act as her undercover agent among the town's teenagers, and while Freda struggles with the secrets and lies among the young, Gina launches herself into an investigation which turns toxic. Could she have been consumed by one of the notorious bogs on the moor or is the reason for her disappearance something more sinister? The detectives are also dealing with thefts of vehicles and machinery, mainly from farms across Dartmoor. These have continued undetected for over six months and questions are being asked in the local media about the lack of progress in catching the thieves.
