lgli/The Palgrave Walter Benjamin Handbook.pdf
The Palgrave Walter Benjamin Handbook
Nathan Ross (editor)
Palgrave Macmillan, 2025
Walter Benjamin is one of the most influential authors in contemporary humanities, exerting a deep fascination for students and garnering scholarly interest in a variety of fields, such as history of philosophy, literature, film and media studies, political science, religion, architecture, art and history. This Handbook provides students and scholars with a guide to Walter Benjamin’s work that explores each of these areas in depth while also giving the reader a chance to discover connections to other areas of thought. In order to do justice to the complexity of Benjamin’s thinking, this volume includes international scholars from a variety of academic disciplines, and is organized such that a dialogue emerges between them. Each section presents an argument for the integration of its subject into the whole, demonstrating that what might seem specialized and esoteric actually intersects with the problems and questions of the other sections.

Expanded Nature: Écologies du cinéma expérimental
Elio Della Noce; Lucas Murari
Palgrave Macmillan, Experimental Film and Artists’ Moving Image, 2025
This book explores the emergence of ecological consciousness in the work of contemporary experimental filmmakers. If it can be said that experimental filmmakers are "expanding" the artistic field through an exploration of the potencies, modes of dissemination and performance of the moving image, in the Anthropocene these practices strive for another kind of expansion: to expand our experience of nature. Appending flowers to the film strip or burying it in the ground, inventing observational devices, allowing the camera to be affected by natural forces, engaging one's own filming body in a symbiotic relationship with the environment, reconstituting ecosystems at the moment of projection: the ecologies of experimental cinema presented in this book constitute forms of practice and engagement that awaken a heightened sensibility towards the living world through cooperative links, casting other beings as subjects and agents of filmic processes, and, finally, reshaping the economy of filmmaking. Thus, ecologies of perception, medium, production, and multinaturalism are deployed, contributing to the restoration of our sensory bond with the natural world.

Epidemiological Realism
Vincent Bruyere
Palgrave Macmillan, Palgrave Studies in Literature, Science and Medicine, 2024
This book examines what it means to live in an epidemiological reality, exploring the worldbuilding properties of epidemiology through the lens of critical theory, literary analysis, and visual culture. Whether we want it or not, we live in a world made of statistical correlations, risk factors, and social determinants of health, animal reservoirs and spillovers, containment strategies and curves to be flattened, prophylactic measures, and syndromic surveillance systems detecting in real-time potential outbreaks. This book uses a series of vignettes to show that we have lived in a version of that reality for quite some time now, even before the formalization of epidemiological tools and concepts at the beginning of the twentieth century.

lgli/of Philosophy and Psychoactive Drug Use.pdf
The Palgrave Handbook of Philosophy and Psychoactive Drug Use
Rob Lovering
Palgrave Macmillan, 2024
In this Handbook, philosophers from around the world address the metaphysics, epistemology, and value of psychoactive (mind-altering) drug use. In so doing, they attempt to answer questions such as: What does the fact of drug-induced mind-altering experiences tell us about natures of the mind, free will, and God? What does it tell us about what, and how, we can know? Are drug-induced mind-altering experiences valuable, morally, aesthetically, or otherwise? Is the acquisition of drug-induced mind-altering experiences ever immoral? Should the acquisition of drug-induced mind-altering experiences ever be legally prohibited? The Handbook gives an overview of the current research, and sets the stage for future directions in philosophical thought relating to psychoactive drug use.

Emotions and Contingencies in Conrad's Fiction
Yoko Okuda
Palgrave Macmillan, 2024
This book sets out to elucidate Conrad’s unique insight into the workings of human emotions for a readership of scholars and graduate students engaged in Conrad studies. It argues that the originality of Conrad’s conception of human emotions lies in his comprehensive grasp of emotions in the broad framework of a contingent world; he regards emotions as fundamentally a manifestation of human defiance towards reality. The book takes up seven of Conrad’s works which are of significance from the perspective of emotions and contingencies, including ‘Heart of Darkness’ and Nostromo .

lgli/Vikram Seth’s Poetics of Pastiche.epub
Vikram Seth’s Poetics of Pastiche
Mélanie Heydari
Palgrave Macmillan, 2024
Vikram Seth is a critical enigma. He is recognized as one of the most important Indian Anglophone authors of his generation; his individual works have been widely reviewed, yet his work has rarely been approached as a whole and remains surprisingly understudied. Perhaps the chief reason for the paucity of critical response to the full compass of Seth’s work is his disregard for intellectual fashion. Indeed, Seth is at once very popular and deliberately unfashionable. His literary affiliations are conservative; seemingly uninterested in any revisionary narrative, he is equally unconcerned by the interpenetration of cultures in our globalized world, representing assimilation rather than cultural difference. He defies the expectations of both postcolonial and world literature; therefore, to discuss his critical neglect is to shed light on the limitations of these labels. As the most thorough attempt to map a general poetics in Seth’s work, this study – the first of its kind on this writer– develops a new critical methodology to capture the nuances of Seth’s literary strategies. It provides scholars and students insight into the key features of Seth’s work and uncovers a consistent authorial strategy running through his seemingly disconnected body of work, namely a systematic use of intertextual practices.

lgli/Regional Romanticism.pdf
Regional Romanticism: Literature and Southwest Scotland, c.1770–1830
Gerard Lee McKeever
Palgrave Macmillan, Palgrave Studies in the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Cultures of Print, 2024
This book tracks the rise of modern cultural regionalism across the turn of the nineteenth century. Attending specifically to literature and literary culture, it examines how a particular region—southwest Scotland—was reimagined between 1770 and 1830. Regionalisms were a vital, emergent force in this period, in dialogue with the local, the national, the transnational and the imperial. In the case of southwest Scotland, the literary inscription of the region was generated in a blossoming periodical press; by visitors like Dorothy Wordsworth and John Keats; by resident icon Robert Burns; by homesick emigrants such as Allan Cunningham; by adventurers, colonialists and pirates looking back from within and beyond the formal limits of empire; by the unprecedented success of Walter Scott; and by many others navigating the opportunities presented by rapidly evolving economic, environmental and infrastructural conditions. Regional Romanticism illuminates a neglected aspect of anglophone literary history, acknowledging regions and regionalism as a primary frame of reference in late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century culture.

Confronting Femicide: Multidisciplinary Perspectives From Puerto Rico
Nalini Natarajan
Palgrave Macmillan, 2025
This book explores the idea that the extreme criminal action that constitutes femicide must be explored not in isolation, but in the context of gender cruelty and misogyny in society. It focuses on the island of Puerto Rico as a case study. The chapters cover topics such as Afro-feminist and anti-racist grassroots work, transfeminist justice, and the role of art in resistance. This volume is essential reading for scholars of gender studies, activists fighting against gender-based violence, and anyone interested in understanding the complex layers of oppression that lead to such extreme manifestations of violence. It invites readers to think through critical questions about justice, resistance, and the power of community organizing.

lgli/Pathologisation, Depathologisation and Mental Health.pdf
Pathologisation, Depathologisation and Mental Health: Keys for a Contemporary Discussion from Ibero-America
Raudelio Machin Suarez
Palgrave Macmillan, 2024
This book examines the pathologisation and depathologisation of mental health in Ibero-América. It highlights the possibilities and the epistemic limits of the interpretative models of pathos that have legitimised mental health pathologies. Further, it proposes a rereading of psychopathology and analyses the clinical, philosophical, ontological, ethical, psychological and anthropological consequences of this. Across ten chapters it brings together academics from Latin America with colleagues from Europe, Asia and North America to address issues including stigma, aesthetics, childhood, gender, migration, political public or social networks and their relationship with mental health. Section 1 brings critical psychology into dialogue with psychiatry, sociology, philosophy and psychoanalysis to review the conceptual frameworks through which "pathology" has been understood in "psy" discourses. Section 2 presents a range of case studies that demonstrate the impact of debates around the pathologisation and de-pathologisation on mental health care in various populations across Latin American. It will offer fresh insights to practitioners, as well as to students and scholars working in the areas of mental health, critical psychology, medical sociology, Latin American studies, psychiatry and psychoanalysis.

lgli/Ritual, Family and Therapy in Anglophone Literatures.pdf
Ritual, Family and Therapy in Anglophone Literatures
Lars Heiler
Palgrave Macmillan, 2025
This book investigates the triadic constellations between ritual, family, and therapy in literature in English. Many rituals, so-called rites of passage in particular, are strongly associated with the changing status of individuals as members of a family unit. Traditional healing rituals were often designed to have a therapeutic effect, sometimes mentally, but also physically, whereas modern psychotherapies often include ritual elements in order to enhance the efficacy of their treatment. Families, on the other hand, can be the site of therapeutic activity by providing protection, stability, and emotional comfort; yet, difficult family constellations may also be the origin of emotional distress and the reason why a person needs counselling and therapeutic support in the first place. Modern therapies, such as family systems therapy, have expanded their range of interest and influence in order to look at the whole family unit, not just the symptomatic individual, as client. This study discusses nine literary texts—six novels, one literary memoir, and two plays—in which the three dimensions intersect and mutually influence each other.

lgli/Culture and Politics on the Couch.pdf
Culture and Politics on the Couch: Lacanian Interventions
Thomas Svolos
Palgrave Macmillan, The Palgrave Lacan Series, 2024
In this book, Thomas Svolos tests the claim that a practicing psychoanalyst is afforded a unique perspective on issues of politics, social and cultural affairs, trained, as they are, to look out for that which is not readily transparent to a patient. This might be something opaque, something bizarre even, something that is part of the experience of the patient that they are not conscious of, what Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan called, at different points in their work, desire, libido, or, jouissance. It argues that by taking account, in one way or another, of desire, libido and jouissance, we might find another dimension to political, social and cultural matters, a dimension that is present, but generally opaque, to those who deal with them. In a series of original texts and edited dialogues, brought together for the first time, this lively and accessible work offers novel insights on topics ranging from race, climate change and partisan politics, to science fiction and Bruce Springsteen. It will appeal to students, scholars and those with a general interest in psychoanalysis, politics, cultural studies and critical theory.

lgli/The Relevance of René Thom.pdf
The Relevance of René Thom: The Morphological Dimension in Today’s Sciences
Isabel Marcos; Clément Morier
Springer Nature Switzerland AG, Lecture Notes in Morphogenesis, 2024
The body of work presented in this book comes from research carried out since 2017 as part of the international "Actualité de René Thom" project. This project was initially entitled "Morphology and qualitative dynamics: Knowledge of forms / Forms of knowledge". Subsequently, the name "Relevance of René Thom" was chosen for its clarity and evocative power. The aim of this research project is to promote the scientific relevance of René Thom's thinking on forms, and to demonstrate the importance of his method and discoveries. It is based on discussions of Thom's thinking and the method he proposes - i.e., to seek out dynamic structures in order to understand changes of form in nature and at the human-social level, to explain the transformation of these dynamic forms, to study the morphologies of process in various fields in order to advance scientific knowledge... The relevance of this thinker has manifested itself in the form of monthly sessions of a research seminar, held from 2017 to 2022, as well as in the form of international congresses (2018, 2019), bringing together the greatest friends and continuators, both of the work of René Thom himself, and of reflection on morphogenetic dynamics in the most diverse disciplines. This created a space for dialogue and listening between the exact sciences and the social and human sciences. Indeed, the fields of study are necessarily interdisciplinary, since, as René Thom teaches us, morphological organization, or form, in its exchanges with matter, must be considered as "independent" of its substrate, i.e. the environment in which this morphogenesis unfolds. Finally, this book marks a symbolic moment: it takes shape in the year that marks the centenary of the birth of René Thom, who was born in the French town of Montbéliard in 1923. To mark this centenary (1923-2023), a number of initiatives have been launched to celebrate the discoveries and advances of this mathematician-philosopher, ashe liked to call himself... The publication of the present book is one more, which we hope will shed light that will stimulate the morphological gaze Thom so urged us to adopt.

Chauvinism of the West: The Case of American Exceptionalism
Shadia B. Drury
Palgrave Macmillan, 2024
This book is a critical exploration of the intellectual foundations of American foreign policy on the left and the right. The left is inspired by Immanuel Kant’s idea that spreading democracy is the key to universal peace. The right is inspired by the realism of Thucydides, Leo Strauss, and Carl Schmitt. The emphasis is on military power as a sign of superiority and a means to survival. For the right, spreading democracy is merely a ploy for building a global commercial empire to rival the British. Drury gives reasons for rejecting both as manifestations of the chauvinism of the West.

Hearing Eyes, Seeing Ears: Collected Writings on Music in Audiovisual Culture
K.J. Donnelly
Palgrave Macmillan, Palgrave Studies in Audio-Visual Culture, 2025
This book approaches music in audiovisual culture as a complex merged signal rather than as a simple ‘addition’ to the images of film. The audiovisual is central to modern culture, with screens and speakers (including headphones) dominating communication, leisure and drama. While this book mostly addresses film, it also deals with sister media such as television and video games, registering that there is a ‘common core’ of synchronized image and sound at the heart of these different but related media. The traditions of sound and what Michel Chion calls ‘audiovision’ (1994), including principles of accompaniment and industrial processes from film, have been retained and developed in other media. This book engages with the rich history, and varied genres, different traditions and variant strategies of audiovisual culture. However, it also points to and emphasizes the ‘common core’ of flat moving images and synchronized sound and music which marks a dominant in electronic media culture (what might be called ‘screen and speaker/diaphragm culture’). Addressing music as both diegetic and non-diegetic, as both songs and score, the analyses presented in this book aim to attend the precise interaction between music and other elements of audiovisual culture as defining overall configurations. While many writings about music in audiovisual culture focus on ‘what it communicates’, its processes are more complicated and can form a crucial semi-conscious (or perhaps unconscious) background. While music’s effect might be far from simple and unified, part of screen music’s startling effect comes from its unity with the image. Cross-modal ‘crosstalk’ between sound and image forms a whole new signal of its own. Each chapter marks a case study making for a varied collection that embraces rich history and different traditions, as well as the distinct aesthetic boldness of different genres and formats.

Working Lives in Ancient Rome
Del A. Maticic; Jordan Rogers
Palgrave Macmillan, The New Antiquity, 2024
This book sheds new light on labor and laboring in the Roman world. It starts with the individual laborer and works up, emphasizing their agency in navigating, transforming, and transcending the systems and structures around them. Taking advantage of the broad applicability of notions of work and labor to human lives at every rung of Roman society, the volume also offers numerous overlapping frameworks for thinking comparatively between many different kinds of work, whether in agriculture, craft, trade, politics, art, or literature. The book is organized around the ‘typical’ work-life experience of the modern 9-to-5 and provides a means of thinking in a rigorous way about how the working lives of scholars of Rome are caught up in ancient discourse and practices.

Charlotte Mew: Poetics, Bodies, Ecologies
Francesca Bratton; Megan Girdwood; Fraser Riddell
Palgrave Macmillan, Palgrave Studies in Nineteenth-Century Writing and Culture, 2024
This collection of essays explores the life and works of the British poet and author of short stories Charlotte Mew (1869-1928). It represents the first volume dedicated solely to critical engagement with the full range of Mew’s poetry, fiction and essays. Mew moved within a remarkable range of literary and intellectual circles, from The Yellow Book in the 1890s to Bloomsbury’s Poetry Bookshop in the 1910s. As such, her work challenges traditional distinctions between literary periods and sits within the more expansive framework of the long nineteenth century and its legacies. Each chapter contextualises Mew’s oeuvre by examining her experiments with poetic and narrative genres in relation to her wider late Victorian and early modernist intellectual milieu. The volume draws together literary scholars working across the fields of poetry and poetics, decadence, modernism, ecocriticism and queer theory, while illustrating the particular stylistic and thematic complexities of Mew’s writing.

Harold Laski, the Reluctant Marxist: Socialist Democracy for a World in Turmoil
Peter Lamb
Palgrave Macmillan, Marx, Engels, and Marxisms, 2024
This book examines Harold Laski’s relationship to Marxism. Laski was a reluctant Marxist; he had been a pluralist, democratic socialist who wanted to reach a better society by means of parliamentary, constitutional and associational channels. In fact, he never abandoned these early aspirations. In the 1930s and 1940s he wove them into a distinctive Marxist position as he gradually came to believe that there was no answer to Marxist philosophy on history, social change and the prospects for socialism. It is the incorporation of his earlier political thought into his later work that makes his Marxism so fascinating and his work raises important questions. Harold Laski’s Marxism aims to bring a relatively forgotten political theorist back into the spotlight. Peter Lamb provides an overview to Laski’s political thought in the 20th century and explores his connections to essential foundations of Marxist thought. He ends with a discussion of ways in which Laski’s Marxism is of lasting significance and can contribute to more recent Marxist and neo-Marxist debates.

Care and Coercion: An Existential and Psychosocial Narrative Study of Mental Health Care Professionals
Kjetil Moen
Palgrave Macmillan, Studies in the Psychosocial, 2024
This book presents an existential and psychosocial interpretation of the experiences of mental health care practitioners whose work involves use of coercion. Through in-depth case studies carried out in Norway, and theoretical discussions, it examines how the use of coercion is not merely directed by laws and regulations, but also by the situated subjectivities of the practitioners, and the wider contexts informing them. It demonstrates how the inner and outer worlds, the psychic and the social, and the existential and the cultural, all impact the professionals' experience and capacity to care. Employing a phenomenological and contextual approach, the book explores the practitioners’ paradoxical experiences of mandating and physically undertaking coercive measures toward vulnerable patients, while at the same time being members of a democratic society in which autonomy is a defining feature. It demonstrates the impact on professionals who are both authorized to use coercion and critiqued by the authorities for doing so. The author discusses what informs the moral deliberations taking place within and between professional subjects in charged situations involving use of coercion, and how the experience of using coercion informs the self-understanding of the professional and thus potentially future decision-making processes pertaining to the use of coercive measures. In doing so the book provides a look behind closed doors of “total institutions” that addresses, and partly undresses, psychiatric power. This book offers a rich, contextual examination of mental health care practice that will be of interest to students, practitioners, and researchers of psychiatry, as well as those of adjacent fields such as psychology, social work, nursing, and criminology.

The aim of the book is to give an introduction to the main concepts in modern dynamics. The Herman Theorem on rigidity of circle diffeomoprhisms is used to achieve this goal. Indeed, we reprove this sophisticated theorem with modern techniques involving renormalization and, in the meantime, discuss most of the important concepts used in dynamics. The one-dimensional context of the Herman Theorem reduces the technical difficulties and allows to present tools and theories to students with modest background. The book can definitely be used on Master's level.

Heidegger’s Conception of Freedom: Beyond Cause and Effect
Matthew J. Barnard
Palgrave Macmillan, 2024
This book is the first monograph in English exclusively dedicated to the exegesis of Martin Heidegger’s radical conception of freedom which was developed in response to the human experience of existential guilt and mortality explained through the phenomena of transcendence and truth. The book is additionally distinctive in that it is the first to approach these issues with the purpose of clarifying the texts involved rather than constructing a novel conception of agency or freedom on the basis of those texts. Heidegger’s Conception of Freedom is ideal for scholars and researchers of philosophy and especially for those focusing on Heidegger's thought, existentialism and phenomenology.

Philip Larkin and the Place of Writing
Ujjwal Kr. Panda
Palgrave Macmillan, Geocriticism and Spatial Literary Studies, 2025
This book extensively investigates the integral nature of spatiality and spatial imagination in the works of Philip Larkin. It addresses Larkin's idea of space and place, both private and public, and reflects upon his early fictional works as well as poems. To do so, the book also emphasizes the essential spatiality of modern British literature with suitable examples from other great poets of the early 20th century modernist movement, including T.S. Eliot, W.B. Yeats, W.H. Auden, and Dylan Thomas. By including detailed analysis of many unpublished poems and his early fictions, the book aspires to be a comprehensive study of Larkin's oeuvre and thus examines how Larkin's sense of place changed as he developed as a writer, starting with Brunette Coleman novels and going on to High Windows . Featuring suitable references from his biographies and letters, the book will examine Larkin's works in relation to a number of relevant ideas from the interdisciplinary spheres of literature, geography and Spatial Humanities.

Revisioning Emerson as a Theorist of Reading
Michael Boatright
Palgrave Macmillan, American Literature Readings in the 21st Century, 2025
Pushing beyond the anthologized writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson frequently taught in American literature courses, this book examines the corpus of his published work to cultivate a unique understanding of his ideas in relation to reading. By following the history of Emersonian criticism over the years, including research surrounding Emerson and reading theory, these chapters provide a persuasive and accessible exploration of Emerson that highlight the value of his work for both literary and reading scholars. Boatright argues that while Emerson predates the research in reading studies that emerged in the early twentieth century, his ideas around reading engagement, shared reading experiences, and experimentation with reading are exceedingly relevant for encouraging healthy reading practices in the literature classroom.

Whiteness at the Abyss: A Lacanian Reading of ‘White Anxiety’
Derek Hook; Donald Moss; Slavoj Žižek; Sheldon George
Palgrave Macmillan, The Palgrave Lacan Series, 2025
‘Whiteness’ is an omnipresent term within research on race and racism. This book differs from existing conceptualizations by adopting a psychoanalytic line of approach and by directing its attention to a particular socio-historical instantiation of whiteness—the investments, fantasies and fears apparent within (post) apartheid South African contexts. It foregrounds the notion of ‘white anxiety’, which is conceptualized not only via notions of psychical temporality, but with reference to the dystopian visions of the future, ideas of inter-generational guilt, and fantasies of demise. To posit an imagined ‘end to whiteness’ is not, of course, an uncontroversial gesture; the closing section of the book surveys the key themes—antisemitism, white Nationalism, the trope of the race traitor—in online attacks the author was subjected to. This compelling work will appeal to all those with an interest in psychoanalytic approaches to race and racism, and to anyone working in the areas of critical race and whiteness studies.

E(n)stranged: Rethinking Defamiliarization in Literature and Visual Culture
Nilgun Bayraktar; Alberto Godioli
Palgrave Macmillan, 2024
Variously translated as “estrangement,” “enstrangement” or “defamiliarization,” Viktor Shklovsky’s concept of ostranenie is more relevant than ever. This collection offers new insights into the theories and practices of ostranenie across various languages and cultures, with a particular focus on the 20th and 21st centuries. Our current era is marked by a dramatic redefinition of the normal and the strange, the familiar and the weird. The rise of far-right populism has increasingly normalized xenophobic and nativist stances previously confined to the fringes of the political spectrum. Additionally, the climate crisis has led to the ongoing renegotiation of the concepts of normalcy and emergency amid widespread efforts to adapt to the “new (ab)normal.” Exploring defamiliarization provides a unique perspective to comprehend and question these processes and their profound cultural implications. Focusing on ostranenie also offers valuable insights into how aesthetic forms serve a political function. Defamiliarization can take on various forms, including retro-futuristic dystopias, stylized films, and darkly humorous cartoons and memes. It can be an effective tool for political activation that relies on formal innovation rather than superficial emotional engagement. This collection brings together the work of a group of scholars examining defamiliarization across different media. It explores questions such as: How can we differentiate between various forms of defamiliarization and analyze their effects on the reader/viewer? How is defamiliarization connected to the weird, the eerie, or the uncanny? As a result, the collection offers an updated theoretical framework for understanding the wide range of emergent artistic and literary practices of e(n)strangement in the current era and their significant political affordances.

A Critique of Pure Education: Radically Rethinking the Education Archipelago
Nick Peim
Palgrave Macmillan, Palgrave Studies in Alternative Education, 2024
This book analyses educational theory in order to offer an alternative view of the history of education in modernity. It provides a new understanding of education as a phenomenon that draws on powerful lines of thinking, but also makes a significant departure from the conventional wisdom of both education policy and education studies. These perspectives offer an original and challenging account of what education is and of what politics has become, providing resources to rethink education as a fundamental dimension of the unprecedented political order of our time. It does this through a focus on what it takes to be the key, complex and expanding political apparatus of education. Taking the school to be the paradigm institution of modernity and beyond, the book proposes that we see the school as central to contemporary political ontology.

Public Everyday Space: Cultural Politics in Neoliberal Barcelona (Hispanic Urban Studies)
Megan Saltzman
Palgrave Macmillan, Hispanic Urban Studies, 2024
This book explores how everyday practices in public space (sitting, playing, walking, etc.) challenge the increase of top-down control in the global city. Public Everyday Space</i》 focuses on post-Olympic Barcelona—a time of unprecedented levels of gentrification, branding, mass tourism, and immigration. Drawing from examples observed in public spaces (streets, plazas, sidewalks, and empty lots), as well as in cultural representation (film, photography, literature), this book exposes the quiet agency of those excluded from urban decision-making but who nonetheless find ways to carve out spatial autonomy for themselves. Absent from the map or postcard, the quicksilver spatial phenomena documented in this book can make us rethink our definitions of culture, politics, inclusion, legality, architecture, urban planning, and public space.

The Principle as Ground, Non-Contradiction and Aristotle
Aldo Stella, Giancarlo Ianulardo
Palgrave Macmillan, 2024, 2024
Numerous thinkers have considered the Principle of Non-Contradiction, but none has clearly identified its inherent limitation: that it is itself only a formal principle. This book shows that negation plays a fundamental role both in the constitution of the principle and in the affirmation of its value, which consists in its undeniability. Since it is a formal negation, it is extrinsic to the negated in such a way that it is configured as a negation only insofar as it is applied to something. On the basis of this analysis, it is shown that it is possible to reverse the usual philosophical perspective: it makes no sense to speak of proof of the principle, but only of proof by virtue of the principle. This book is essential reading for all scholars and researchers of theoretical philosophy and Aristotle.

Visual Metaphor and Drawn Narratives
John Miers
Palgrave Macmillan, 2025
This book contributes to metaphor and comics scholarship by bringing together established theories of metaphor and of depiction and applying the result to the analysis of narrative drawing. Miers synthesizes two strands in recent comics scholarship: the analysis of comics as drawn texts, informed by art history and aesthetic philosophy, and the use of contemporary metaphor theory as a lens to examine how meaning is produced in comics. It aims to enrich and substantiate claims about the metaphorical characteristics of pictorial representations, and develop our understanding of how metaphor use is guided by stylistic features of drawing that are characteristic of the comics form.

Tailings Dam Failure
Robert C. Lo
Springer Nature Switzerland AG, 2026
Mining has evolved in the 21st century into an indispensable industry that provides a variety of mineral products needed to sustain a modern society. To achieve efficiency, it has also grown into an integrated enterprise of enormous size, wielding substantial economic power. Tailings is essentially a fine-particle mine-waste byproduct. Its management has gone through major transformations in the last century. In early years tailings was disposed of out of sight and literally out of mind. However, due to the physical and chemical characteristics of tailings, this laissez-faire approach in dealing with its disposal led to significant environmental degradation such as pollution and blockage of watercourses, etc. With the rising environmental protection movement, the mining operation is under increasing regulatory constraints and governmental monitoring. Modern tailings dams have become major hydraulic structures designed, constructed, monitored until they are properly closed andreclaimed after the completion of mining tenure. These dams are often higher than 100 m, with a storage capacity of over hundreds of million cubic metres, serving a vital industrial function for the public. Unfortunately, when such a dam fails, it unleashes enormous destructive power causing inundation of water and tailings mud over the downstream area resulting in fatalities and lasting environmental degradation. This book presents a condensed monograph on forensic investigations of select case histories of failed tailings dams. The selection tends to emphasize recent cases that have representative characteristics including those affecting the evolution of the current practice of tailings dam engineering. Efforts are made to facilitate readers’ understanding of important factors involved by using plain language. Technical terms are clearly explained before their usage. The objective of the monograph is to provide a neutral reference on tailings dam failures for all stakeholders. The author hopes

Translations and Copyright in the Italian Book Trade: Publishers, Agents, and the State (1900-1947)
Anna Lanfranchi
Palgrave Macmillan, New Directions in Book History, 2024
The 19th-century copyright revolution gave authors and translators powerful tools over the use of their works. It encouraged publishers to form networks that connected them to writers, translators, authors’ societies, and literary agents worldwide. This book argues that the development of international frameworks for the protection of literary property represented a watershed in the transnational circulation of texts in translation. Through the lens of the post-Unification Italian translation market of British and US authors (1900-1947), it combines a copyright historical approach to book history with a systematic survey of British and Italian archives. It positions the Italian publishing industry within the broader European and transatlantic copyright market to explore the cultural, social, and political value of translation rights, offering a new interpretative key to the transnational nature of the modern book trade.

The Geometry and Topology of Coxeter Groups (Springer Monographs in Mathematics)
Michael W. Davis
x, 2, 2025
"The Geometry and Topology of Coxeter Groups" is a comprehensive and authoritative treatment of Coxeter groups from the viewpoint of geometric group theory. Groups generated by reflections are ubiquitous in mathematics, and there are classical examples of reflection groups in spherical, Euclidean, and hyperbolic geometry. Any Coxeter group can be realized as a group generated by reflection on a certain contractible cell complex, and this complex is the principal subject of this book. The book explains a theorem of Moussong that demonstrates that a polyhedral metric on this cell complex is nonpositively curved, meaning that Coxeter groups are "CAT(0) groups." The book describes the reflection group trick, one of the most potent sources of examples of aspherical manifolds. And the book discusses many important topics in geometric group theory and topology, including Hopf's theory of ends; contractible manifolds and homology spheres; the Poincare Conjecture; and Gromov's theory of CAT(0) spaces and groups. Finally, the book examines connections between Coxeter groups and some of topology's most famous open problems concerning aspherical manifolds, such as the Euler Characteristic Conjecture and the Borel and Singer conjectures."

Nikolai Vasilevski
Birkhäuser, Operator Theory Advances and Applications, 2024
This book is about function spaces aspects of polyanalytic functions, a topic that has gained a lot of attention in the past decades. This book fills a gap in literature and is written by a leading researcher in the field.Rather than studying polyanalytic functions from a complex analysis point of view, it considers the (Lie)-algebraic part of the theory. Several generalizations are offered. The presented theory has many applications, including to quantum physics. An extensive introduction to the topic is provided, making the book accessible to specialists and newcomers alike.

Anti-Semitism at the Limit: Critical Theory and Psychoanalysis
Benjamin B. Strosberg
Palgrave Macmillan, Studies in the Psychosocial, 2024
In this book, Benjamin Strosberg explores difficulties and anxieties inherent in studying, defining, and defending against anti-Semitism by tracing a concurrent difficulty in thinking about Jewishness, which has historically served as a limit case for central social categories such as outsider, religion, race, gender, and nation. Dr. Strosberg draws on Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of proteophobia—the anxious fear of what doesn’t fit into clear-cut categories—to think more carefully about anti-Semitism as response to the complex-realities of ambivalence and otherness. The book proposes ‘negative psychology’ as a methodology for studying anti-Semitism and proteophobia rooted in psychoanalysis and Theodor Adorno’s Critical Theory. Drawing from lived experiences, contemporary events, and debates in the field, this compelling work explores the broad implications of the investigation of anti-Semitism for politics, education, and psychoanalysis, as well as the specific implications for Jewish identity and resistance.

Global City Dilemmas and Anglophone Singapore Literature: Intersectional Politics and Cultural Negotiations in the 21st Century
Angelia Poon
Palgrave Macmillan, 2024
This book looks at culturally significant, English-language texts produced in Singapore in the last 20 years by writers such as Balli Kaur Jaswal, Alfian Sa’at, Claire Tham, Amanda Lee Koe, Ng Yi-Sheng and Kevin Kwan. It provides an analysis sensitive to the writers' socio-political and cultural contexts, and shows how Singapore's Anglophone literature successfully disrupts the government’s narrative on transforming the island into a global city. By asking difficult questions, challenging hegemonic perspectives and exploring alternatives, the writers interrogate the country’s colonial history, its post-colonial Cold War development, and the normalization of totalizing narratives. Their texts also grapple with key aspects of contemporary Singapore society: its official multiracialism, forms of inequality, distribution of privilege, and gender and sexual politics. By connecting these texts to developments in postcolonial literary criticism, cosmopolitanism and globalization studies, thisbook sheds light on the ideological and cultural forces at work in Singapore society today.

The Immanence of Theology and the Absurdity of Faith: Believing in the World
Elijah Prewitt-Davis
Palgrave Macmillan, Radical Theologies and Philosophies, 2024
The constant inundation of the affect and information experienced by contemporary individuals exposes the tragic nature of the world, making nihilism an epistemologically reasonable response. To counter the threat of nihilism, Elijiah Prewitt-Davis argues that knowledge must be replaced by belief. Against the common protestant concept of belief as strictly personal and interior, he proposes believing in the world as an absurd and immanent faith in the impossible—a belief that allows one to see and feel the potentialities simmering within the world as it is. Following Gilles Deleuze call to “transform belief,” Prewitt-Davis explores how belief heightens an affective attachment to our embeddedness on the world, revealing the potentialities with which time is always pregnant. Believing in the world as it is paradoxically becomes the mode of transforming the world inasmuch as the potential for something impossibly new is always immanently present.

The Palgrave Handbook of Non-State Actors in East-West Relations
Péter Marton; Gry Thomasen; Csaba Békés; András Rácz
Springer Nature Switzerland AG, E-design series, 2024
The Handbook introduces to readers (accessibly for specialist and non-specialist scholars, students and layman audiences) the diverse universe of non-state actors (NSAs) that have played or are currently playing a significant role in the context of East-West relations (from 1945 to the present). With a view to the oft-seen political debates about which non- state actors may be independent or controlled by particular states, and in what ways they may be useful or harmful to the interests of particular actors, this volume is interested in analysing and assessing the relationship of NSAs to key state actors in the context of the politics of East-West relations. Key state actors in this context include more than just the United States (on the one hand) and the Soviet Union or Russia (on the other hand). To offer a structured overview, the volume explores possible typologies of the relationships conceivable between NSAs and states. New concepts and organising principles are presented, to support a process-tracing analysis of the evolution of proxy ships, partnerships and other types of connections between states and non-state actors. Degrees, sources and types of control and influence are considered. Further, the Handbook's chapters also examine NSAs’ impact on the dynamics of interstate conflict and cooperation in the East-West dimension. The systematic examination of the relationship between states and NSAs in East-West relations proposed here is the first undertaking of its kind. International scholarship in political science and strategic analyses have so far neglected to develop an analytical framework and a truly nuanced understanding that could capture the intricate and multilevel relationships that exists between NSAs and states in this context.

A Clinician's Evidence-Based Guide to Supplements
Grant Cooper & Joseph Herrera & Aaron Bolds & Scott Curtis
Springer Nature Switzerland AG, 2024
Nutritional supplements are ubiquitous. A physician may be asked 10-20 times a day about various supplements. That same physician ends up relying primarily on the internet for information about the supplements. Currently, there is no single, easy-to-use reference for a physician to access to learn about the evidence behind different common supplements. This text fills that gap by allowing physicians to be able to educate themselves and their patients about important supplements in terms of what the data actually says about those supplements, how they work or don't work on different problems and also how those supplements may interact with a patient's medications. The chapters are organized alphabetically by supplement to make it easy for a physician to reference which one they are specifically looking for. There are eight chapters total as well as an introduction and conclusion. Each supplement is broken down into subsections such as what is it and howit works in the body, what is it used for and at what dosage, evidence for or against its different uses, safety concerns, side effects, and precautions and interactions with other medications. Written by experts in the field, An Evidence-Based Guide to Supplements appeals to practicing physicians of every specialty that interact with patients. Supplements are asked about in almost every medical office but especially with primary care physicians, neurologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, geriatric medicine professionals, pain medicine specialists and rheumatologists.

Beyond Little Women: The Secondary Works of Louisa May Alcott
Lauren Hehmeyer
Palgrave Macmillan, 2025
This collection concentrates on the secondary works of Louisa May Alcott and looks at the idea that Alcott was as heavily influenced by her times as by her transcendentalist upbringing. Her work often subverts the conventional and includes the new, the practical, and the real. The sections include: (1) the gothic and the monstrous feminine, (2) the theme of useful work, (3) the themes of physical and mental health, and (4) Alcott’s philosophy concerning creativity and genius. Contributors emphasize Alcott’s belief in women’s agency and argue that Alcott can be considered as a brilliant bridge between the Transcendental idealism of the early nineteenth century and later reforms.
