Seule œuvre théâtrale écrite et publiée par Céline, L'Eglise constitue en quelque sorte une répétition générale du Voyage au bout de la nuit. L'Eglise, bien que publiée en 1933, un an après le Voyage, avait été écrite en 1926. Et déjà le protagoniste s'appelle le docteur Bardamu. Dans L'Eglise, le ton, bien que nouveau, n'a pas encore la force torrentielle que l'on connaît. La langue classique se heurte encore au parler populaire qui s'épanouit en quelques monologues très céliniens. L'action se déroule en Afrique, dans une petite résidence française, puis aux Etats-Unis dans les coulisses d'un music-hall new-yorkais, ensuite à Genève au siège de la Société des Nations et enfin dans la banlieue parisienne, dans un bistrot transformé en clinique au dernier acte. Les thèmes céliniens apparaissent au hasard des situations : le mépris des coloniaux ambitieux et médiocres, l'impuissance de l'homme devant la souffrance et la mort, le besoin de beauté et d'harmonie, l'amour des gens simples et des enfants. Ferdinand Bardamu apparaît comme un être vaincu d'avance par la fatalité et le cynisme général, essayant de survivre dans l'ombre. Comme le dit un des personnages : "Bardamu est un garçon sans importance collective. C'est tout juste un individu." Sartre mettra cette phrase en épigraphe à La Nausée. Le grand intérêt que suscite L'Eglise est d'être une des toutes premières oeuvres de Céline et de contenir en germe les éléments qui permettront de situer son auteur à côté de Faulkner et de Joyce.

"The environmental movement has often been accused of being overly negative--trying to stop "progress." The Nature of Design, on the other hand, is about starting things, specifically an ecological design revolution that changes how we provide food, shelter, energy, materials, and livelihood, and how we deal with waste. Ecological design is an emerging field that aims to recalibrate what humans do in the world according to how the world works as a biophysical system. Design in this sense is a large concept having to do as much with politics and ethics as with buildings and technology. The book begins by describing the scope of design, comparing it to the Enlightenment of the 18th century. Subsequent chapters describe barriers to a design revolution inherent in our misuse of language, the clockspeed of technological society, and shortsighted politics.
